Alitalia (a portmanteau of “wings” and “Italy”) is the national flag carrier of Italy with a headquarters in Fiumincino Rome and main hub at Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport, Rome (FCO). It was originally founded in 1947, and after several changes in name and ownership, went into administration in 2017. The Italian government is currently funding the airline while a suitable buyer is evaluated.
The airline joined the SkyTeam alliance in 2001.

• Shortly after World War II ended, The British Government assisted in the formation of the airline by investing a 30% interest through British European Airways, the state-owned carrier that later became British Airways.
Alitalia has a frequent flyer program called Milemiglia that rewards passengers on miles flown. Their rewards are significantly better than other SkyTeam members and still include the rare round-the-world awards.

Alitalia (designator code AZ) has codeshare and frequent flier agreements with SkyTeam members and additional airline partners.
