Qantas Airways Ltd. is the national flag carrier for Australia and the third oldest airline in the world, founded in 1920. Their headquarters is in Sydney, with a main hub at Sydney Airport (SYD) and 4 additional hubs in Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth. They are a founding OneWorld global alliance member.
The name ‘Qantas’ comes from an acronym for it’s original name: Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services. It’s nickname is ‘The Flying Kangaroo’.
• The Hollywood movie Rainman was marketing gold for Qantas: in the 1988 film autistic Ray (Dustin Hoffman) refuses to get on a plane because he will only fly Qantas because they had never crashed.
• Qantas began flying its new non-stop route from Perth to London. Covering a distance of more than 9,000 miles, and taking 17 hours, 20 minutes, the new flight is not only the first commercially scheduled non-stop service between Australia and Europe, but it also ranks as the new second-longest flight in the world by distance and Qantas's own new longest flight!
